Before Dinner Hike

The kids wanted Wes to see the new trail we found the other day. Last night before dinner we headed out and it was the perfect way to end the day.

Wishing you all a good week!

Run & Jump & Play

When you are a five year old boy and you have been sitting out in the cold watching birds for 15 minutes or more the only thing to do when you are finished is to run and jump, find sticks to use as swords and generally do everything you could not do for fear of scaring off the birds.
Yes. That is what Dylan did...

He was great during the bird count and really got into spotting the birds, but he was excited when we decided to get up and explore... and run and jump and play!

The list of all the birds have spotted so far this year is up over at the Outskirts Nature Journal if you are interested in checking out the birds that have been visiting our area.

Icy Trail

What do ya do on a February day when the morning starts out a bit rough?

Head out to find a new trail of course.

Wondering about the neatly set up pile of branches. Trap?

And we found an amazing one. Lots of rocks to navigate, ice to explore and critters to watch. A good way to reset the day!

How is winter in your neck of the woods?

The Outskirts Nature Journal - A Giveaway

We were out birdwatching this weekend for The Great Backyard Bird Count. It has been a great motivator to get out the door and enjoy the winter nature around us.

Speaking of the nature around us the kids and I have decided to start a new blog dedicated to our nature studies. We are calling it The Outskirts Nature Journal.
There we are going to share more about what we have been learning and the resources we use. We are also adding some lists on the sidebar. We have already started our Bird List for 2012. We will also be adding lists of other critters we are spotting along with the guides we love to help us learn about those creatures
Over at The Outskirts Nature Journal we are having a giveaway and would love for you to click over and check it out. Today is the last day of the bird count and the last day to enter to win the giveaway as well.

Thanks!

Happy Bird Coutning!

Great Backyard Birdcount

We have been seeing some fun birds in our hood lately. The most exciting sighting... a huge flock robins followed by an even bigger flock of waxwings.

We learned that they are common winter visitors here in Nova Scotia during winters with lots of fruit on the trees. These flocks are the northern flocks that are wintering in the warm-to-them Nova Scotia. A little mind bending but true!

The Great Backyard Birdcount in easy and fun. For more information you can click here.
