I did not intend to be away from the blog this long... but things happen... life happens!
Earl hit our wee part of Nova Scotia a little hard and we were out of power for two days.
That was a great little transition to a week of camping and as we pulled out of the driveway for our trip the power company showed up to get us up and running. That was good news for Wes as sadly he had to stay behind for work.
We also had a visit from Grandma and Papa who helped in filling our woodshed for winter and joined us for fun in the city. Thanks Grandma and Papa!
We then headed out to the farm for more wood work and good family times.
Some time has been spent trying to settle into a bit of a routine and catch up on a few things... including editing the pictures from camping.
So without further ado...
Our camping trip was the "Not-back-to-school" camping trip organized by our local homeschool group... set up to coincide with the first week kids go back to school in our area.
We went to Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site and it was amazing. Over twenty families were there throughout the week and we were surrounded by other homeschoolers the whole time. It was so fun to see all of the kids running around in little bands knowing that they were going to run into friendly faces around every tree... We swam in lakes, played in the river and saw lots of wildlife including deer, a toad, osprey and many other types of birds along with a few painted turtles. We also got to observe many plants up close including the round-leaved sundew a carnivorous plant. The sunsets did not disappoint and sunrise was misty and beautiful.
There were many learning opportunities that extended what we observed in nature... these included the visitor center with live blanding's turtles... an endangered species... a wonderful interactive display about the song birds in the park, an exhibit about the life of monarch butterflies including chrysalis of soon to emerge butterflies and wonderful displays of local native culture... and throughout the park we found displays sharing information about history, wildlife and geography.

We hope to make it back in the fall... hopefully with both Wes and the canoe in tow...
If you ever find yourself planning a trip to Nova Scotia a stop in Keji is a must...
There is also a seaside adjunct to the park that looks beautiful. Another spot added to our list of places to visit...
And now we are prepping for a trip to Maine tomorrow... only one of the many things I do love about homeschooling... our mobile classroom...
Wishing you all a great weekend!

Gorgeous pictures (as always)! It looks like a wonderful place for kids to explore. I love that there was a constant flow of kids playing in and discovering nature. Couldn't ask for more!
Wow, I think we drove right by while you were there! We were taking our annual "not back to school trip" as well. I think it's great to have such a great support system around you for home schoolers - and camping too! It looks like a great place to go; we stayed at Rissers which was beautiful. I love your photography; really great shots.
What a wonderful way to kick off the new homeschool year!
Your pictures are amazing :0)
This looked liked an ideal place for NBTS camping. We just returned from a NBTS camping trip as well with another lovely homelearning family and met some new people with kids who all learn at home too. It is a communty of families that is vibrant and peaceful, who we hope to get to know much better once we (over time) make our eventual move to Vancouver Island. So much nature to explore there too!!
Your photos captured a sense of quiet and solitude, a wonderful thing about heading to the parks once the school-driven routines begin again. :-)
How wonderful, Dawn! I always enjoy your pictures so much. Makes me wish I was there too!
What a great memory making learning experience. The photos are amazing too!
Thanks Debi. And you are so right!
Nicole... That is too wild. Rissers looks very beautiful. It is super close to the Keji seaside adjunct. The lake was wonderful but there really is nothing like camping at the beach :)
Thanks Tara... I am so happy we went. It is a wonderful way to kick off the fall!
Erin... that is awesome you got a chance to met up with other homelearners. I think it is just as important for the parents as for the kids to have that social support network.
Thanks Annie! Come camp with us any time!
Thank you Abbie! The kids are still talking about it and I know they will for many moons to come!
I think we should sell all our stuff and move over to your place. Goodness, so much natural beauty!
this looks so incredible!! :D
The pictures are fabulous, and it looks like such a great area for kids. The peace and sense of exploration is so calming and appealing.
Paula... We would welcome you with open arms. :)
Lori... We will have to go camping there WHEN you guys come ;)
Thanks Kim. It is a peaceful place. You and your camera would do wonders with the sunsets.
