We have been spending just about every sunny day at the beach... and even on the rainy days you can find us there...

Fionna is in the tide pools most of the day...

She has been finding lots of crabs... and we now know how to tell a male from a female... but on this day we got to see a little crab become a wee bit bigger by molting out of it's old shell...
Amazing!
I had just showed Fionna this video of a crab molting a few days before so it was really great to see up close...even if it was on a much smaller scale.
While Dylan was slightly interested and looked on a few times he was more than happy to leave the real creepy crawly stuff to Fionna and play with his toy snakes. The mama snake was laying her eggs in the sand while the dad snake was protecting her from sharks. What a guy!

Awesome! We've only been tidepooling once, but could have stayed there for hours. What a great treat for Fiona to see molting up close!
Hi! I am loving your blog and discovered you via Annie's blog and from some recent comments via Flickr! I love your family's reverence for nature and the place you live looks so inspiring for outdoor activities and enthusiasm-led learning. (We're unschoolers who live very close to nature). Now I understand why and how I find so many "crab shells"-- Maybe they aren't the shells, but rather the exoskeletons?! I am going to look and see if I can find some online examples of this process for my crab-lovin' boys tomorrow.
Thanks!!

Those photos, and noticing the molting, is positively David Attenboroughish!
You all have keen eyes to spot the molting crab in progress! Very Cool :0)
How wonderful to be able to witness that! I'm feeling ignorant now, as I've found many a crab exoskeleton on the beach and just assumed something had eaten the innards. (Duh! That would leave it more mangled...)
fantastic photos!!! what a thing to see! :D
Wow! That was a first for me. I've seen rattle snakes molt, but this looked a lot more complicated. So glad you are loving your new home.
See you soon.

Oh, to live so close to such wonder. How awesome. Love it!
such a sweet little crabby! I love photos from the beach...such a serene, natural place. I brought home some crab "shells" last time we were at the beach for our nature table...I always smile to see them:)
great site, glad I found it:)
Thanks for all of your comments...
We were thinking that we were seeing dead crabs too for the longest time. Now we know how all those shells show up on the beach. It was really very cool to see!
Gwynneth... Fionna LOVES Sir David Attenborough!
